Raw food trial – day 8

by Bart on October 17, 2009

Today I had some family visiting, including a 1 year old and a 3 year old, so as you can imagine I am exhausted :-)

The family opted for a meal from a burger chain that will remain unnamed, but I was able to talk them into a banana and spinach green smoothie tasting, and they’ve seemed to really enjoy it.

It’s too bad that the visit was on a short notice, otherwise I would have prepared some goodies. Perhaps next time.

Today, I had the following:

Meal #1 @ 10:00am

I started the day with the customary smoothie (30 oz):

  • half an ounce baby greens
  • 3.5 oz of mixed herb salad
  • 1 stalk of celery
  • 3 bananas
  • water and ice

For the reasons I’ve mentioned yesterday, I left out hemp seeds and anything else that might have been giving me problems. The result was a significant decrease in the number of bathroom trips today. Although, since I did not have my smoothie until few hours after I woke up, perhaps that delay was the reason for feeling better, and not removing fats from the smoothie.

Since I have my first smoothie right after waking up on weekdays, I’ll be able to test this theory on Monday.

Meal #2 @12:30pm

As I was waiting for my guests to arrive, I decided to grab a pre-made, store bought raw meal. This time I went for raw pizza. Out of all raw meals that are made to approximate their cooked counterparts, the pizza is probably the least like its non-raw equivalent.

It was tasty, but not as good as the raw lasagna I had last night.

Meal #3 @ 7:00pm

I decided to go with a very simple meal for dinner. One of the things I bought yesterday was a raw turkey salad like pate. These pates are made with seeds, often mixed with nuts, that are ground in the food processor and flavored with minced veggies, herbs and spices. I am planning on making a few kinds of those in the next few weeks, and will talk about them more at that time.

Together with carrot and celery sticks, as well as cucumber and tomato, the raw “turkey” pate made for a filling and quite tasty dinner.

I followed the veggies with 3 dates.

Today I snacked on:

  • 1 pear
  • 1 plum
  • 1 strawberry
  • few slices of an apple
  • two thirds of a banana
  • handful of spinach
  • half a package of raw cookies – I forgot to take a picture of these, but I will next time – they are flat disks, about 3/4 inch in diameter and made from sesame seeds, dates and coconut. They remind me more of chips than cookies, but regardless of that, they are delicious.
  • 1 cup green tea with lemon juice
  • 1 handful of goji berries

The unusual amounts of apple, banana and spinach that I snacked on today were all due to food sharing and smoothie tasting :-)

As I begin week two of my raw food diet trial, my weight stands at 150 lb., which is 5 lb. less than I was a week ago. I would imagine about half of that can be accounted for by the difference in content of the digestive system on the raw versus cooked diets. Still, losing 2.5 pounds in a week is not too bad.

On to day 9…
