Raw food trial – day 4

by Bart on October 13, 2009

Today was the first time while eating raw that I was not feeling hungry at any point during the day.

I did enjoy a few snacks, but I had them only before conference calls, so that I would not get hungry while being unable to run downstairs and grab something to eat.

When eating cooked foods, I would get hungry occasionally, but it would be a mild feeling, that grew slowly until satisfied. On raw foods, I am noticing that the intensity of hunger increases at a much faster rate. It would still take a few hours before hunger became a major nuisance, but there is no reason to deny myself, so I ate today’s snacks with an expectation of getting hungry soon.

Of course, I could have just had a snack waiting right here on my desk… but let’s be realistic, like I’d let a piece of raw cheesecake just sit there in front of me and not eat it! :-)

After work, I looked in the fridge and realized that I am running very low on greens, so I took a quick trip to the health food store. In addition to greens I picked up some zucchini – I am thinking of trying to make a raw zucchini hummus. I need something to have with avocado and alfalfa sprouts :-)

I also picked up a bag of my new favorite snack – kale chips (actually, they are called kale tempuraw), which I wrote about on day 1. As I was grabbing the bag off the shelf, I noticed vegetable tempuraw, which is similar, just made with various dehydrated veggies, like bell pepper and yams, rather than just kale.

The verdict is… 3 stars. Respectable, but it’s not a 5 star snack like the kale version. The main reason is that while the kale tempuraw is very delicate, crunchy, and melts in your mouth, the veggie tempuraw can be very hard. It’s also less salty, giving you less of that pleasant “potato chip feeling” when you eat it.

My meals today were:

Meal #1 @ 8:00am

I started with the following green smoothie (30oz):

  • 1.5 cups green grapes
  • 6 leaves of romaine lettuce
  • 1 pear
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tablespoon of hemp seeds
  • water and ice

Wow! This one really woke me up :-)

This is by far the sweetest green smoothie I’ve ever made. Not surprising given all the sweet fruit in its base. I think this combination would work great with darker greens as well, because all the fruit sugar would mask their bitter taste.

Meal #2 @ 12:30pm

I started lunch with a store bought cucumber and sea vegetable salad.

In the 1990s, before I was vegan, I was a big fan of sushi and had it once or twice each week. I really enjoyed the texture and the taste. So, perhaps my taste buds have changed, because this salad tasted horrible. Looking at the list of ingredients, nothing else other than the various sea veggies could have caused the bad taste.

So, it went back to the fridge – to wait to be tossed, and out came another store bought meal, a curried cauliflower crunch.

This one was quite good actually, with a nice mild indian flavor.

I followed the entree with a handful of goji berries, mostly to get rid of the sea weed aftertaste, which still lingered. And lingered. And lingered…

Meal #3 @ 7:30pm

I was not very hungry, so I decided to go with a small green smoothie. I had 20oz drink made from:

  • 1 orange
  • 1 banana
  • bunch of romaine lettuce leaves – used all the small ones that are in the center of a head of lettuce
  • 2 kale leaves
  • few stems of parsley
  • a bit of water and ice

This smoothie was less sweet than I would have expected. I have some oranges in the fridge, so I might try another one tomorrow. This time with a few oranges and perhaps spinach – a green OJ of sorts.

My snacks today were:

  • slice of raw chocolate raspberry cheesecake – store bought. It was amazing. Much lighter than the raw cashew cheesecake I had made.
  • 1 raw macaroon, raspberry flavor
  • half a bag of vegetable tempuraw
  • 1 kiwi
  • 5 strawberries

Comparing my notes to prior days, it seems like I ate much less… but for some reason I am feeling as if I ate much, much more. I wonder what that is all about?

Oh well, on to day 5…
