Raw food trial – day 21

by Bart on October 30, 2009

Well, it looks like I made it through the first 3 weeks on a raw food diet!

As of this morning, the scale showed 147 pounds, which makes me 8 pounds lighter than I was three weeks ago. This happened even though most of the time I am not paying attention to what I am eating – as long as it’s raw. And vegan :-)

But, it’s not magic. As I look at my food log, especially on days like today, it’s clear that I am eating less calories than I ate before the raw food trial, when I was maintaining my weight.

At the same time, I am not going hungry or feeling that I am depriving myself.

With most foods eaten on a raw food diet not being calorically dense, nuts and avocados aside, it takes much more volume to get the same number of calories. But my stomach is only so big, so I end up eating less calories, and it just happens to be enough to satisfy hunger.

This is not much different than when someone goes through a stomach reduction surgery and rapidly loses weight afterwards. I am just getting much better nutrition. And do not have a large hospital bill. Or post-operative pain. Or likelihood of complications.

It truly is a better way. Even if only to lose weight.

Today I had the following:

Meal #1 @ 12:00pm

I was not very hungry this morning, so I delayed my first meal, snacking on carrot sticks throughout the morning instead.

Like yesterday, I had Buffalo Bites for my mid day meal today. Once again, the picture and more information about this entree can be found in the raw food trial day 13 post.

I am starting to repeat myself… I wonder if that’s a detox symptom ;-)

Meal #2 @ 7:30pm

Since at this point I haven’t had any greens, I decided to make an evening smoothie. It’s Friday night, so I’ll be up late anyway, and the extra sugar from all the fruit in a green smoothie should not cause a problem.

While I was at the store, I picked up a bag of frozen peaches, so I thought I might as well use them, especially since I have not had any peach smoothies yet during my raw food trial.

I made a 34 oz smoothie that consisted of:

  • 5 oz of baby spinach
  • 2 bananas
  • 10 oz of peaches, frozen
  • water

This smoothie was excellent. It pretty much tasted like… peaches :-) I also managed to get it just right texturewise. Sometimes smoothies will turn out a bit too thick, other times they will be too watery, but this one came out just perfect.

Today I snacked on the following:

  • 10 baby carrots
  • 1 raw brownie
  • 2 handfuls of goji berries
  • handful of red grapes

On to day 22…
