Raw food trial – day 2

by Bart on October 11, 2009

I had my last snack at about 8:30pm yesterday. I stayed up late, and by about 11:30pm, I was getting hungry. However, I decided I wasn’t going to eat, as I wanted to avoid going to sleep on a full stomach. I am sure over time, as I get used to eating this way, I’ll be able to better judge how much food I need.

Interestingly enough, when I woke up this morning I was not hungry at all, and as a result have not had my first meal until after 10:00am.

I felt pretty good throughout the day, but by about 7:30pm I started to feel tired. I think the fact that the Rangers game started at 5:00pm today, instead of the usual 7-ish, contributed to it. It’s like with Pavlov’s dog… the game ends, I start feeling sleepy :-)

I’ve also started noticing some significant changes in the bathroom department. I am not going to spell out the details, but let’s just say that with so much extra fiber in my diet it was not unexpected. It will probably take some time for my body to get used to what and how much I am eating.

Here’s what I ate today:

Meal #1 @ 10:15am

I started the day with a green smoothie (32oz), made from:

  • 4 leaves of chard
  • 2 leaves of romaine lettuce
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 1 fresh banana
  • handful of a sprout mix – green peas, adzuki beans, lentils
  • water

There is nothing special about using fresh versus frozen bananas. It just happened that I only had 1 that was fully ripe.

This smoothie was definitely not the best I’ve ever had. I’m trying to figure out what can be added to them and what cannot be. Yesterday I tried hemp seeds and that was good. Today I tried sprouted beans, and that clearly was not. Don’t get me wrong it was not terrible, but it was unusual enough, so that I did not enjoy it as much as other green smoothies.

Also, I decided not to take photos of all my smoothies, since they are mostly the same, differing only in the shade of green.

About 20 minutes after having my smoothie, I had a handful of goji berries.

Meal #2 @ 4:00pm

Zucchini pasta with raw marinara sauce. This is a recipe I have already written about in another blog post.

Raw marinara sauce

Raw marinara sauce

The raw marinara sauce came out darker than ever before, because I increased the amount of sun dried tomatoes in it. Unfortunately, this also increased amount of sodium, and the sauce came out a bit salty, but still enjoyable. I’ve made enough for two meals, so I now have a quick meal ready in the fridge for tomorrow. And yes, I am keeping the zucchini “pasta” and the sauce separately.

After the main dish I had 2 dates for dessert.

Meal #3 @ 8:30pm

For my evening meal I had another green smoothie (32 oz):

  • 2 leaves of chard
  • 3 leaves of romaine lettuce
  • half of a pineapple
  • half of a frozen banana
  • 1 tablespoon of hemp seeds
  • water and ice

This smoothie was very refreshing (actually I am still drinking it as I am writing this post). It’s a good one for green smoothie novices, but if you do not like the sourness of the pineapple too much, add another half of a banana. I actually made it without the half of a banana first, but it was a bit sour for my taste.

Today’s snacks were:

  • 2 raw macaroons – one cocoa mint, and one pineapple – yum
  • 1 pear
  • 9 oz of green grapes
  • half a bag of kale chips

Looking forward to day 3.
