Raw food trial – day 15

by Bart on October 24, 2009

It’s day 15, which means that I’ve successfully made it through the first half of my 30 day raw food lifestyle trial. Here are my impressions so far.

Eating raw is actually much, much easier than I had expected. During the last 15 days, I have not experienced cravings for any cooked foods. I think that, in part at least, this is due to what I have done in the weeks leading to my raw food diet trial.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time learning about the raw lifestyle and made a long list of foods and recipes to try. This is not even something I wrote down, but every time I came across something interesting about the raw food diet, I thought to myself that I’d have to try it.

As a result I find myself constantly looking forward to every raw meal, and snacks in between my meals, and my mind is not pre-occupied with the foods I am not eating.

There are still challenges that remain, though. For the last two weeks, I have worked from home, which is going to change starting this coming week – I’ll have to make a few trips to the office. This will require some planning, but I am ready for that. Just today, for example, I’ve received a large cooler lunch bag I had ordered last week. I’ll review it after I actually get to use it :-)

But what about the other side of the coin – is raw diet actually doing anything for me?

It’s probably too early to answer that question. As of now, I am not feeling much different eating raw foods, than I felt on a cooked vegan diet. I have not experienced increased, or decreased, energy levels, need for less, or more, sleep, nor any “detox” symptoms that are often reported by people who try eating this way.

But, I still have at least another 15 days to experience all of that… :-)

And as for long term viability of eating raw? I am not yet sure of that either. But if I won’t continue eating nearly 100% raw past the 30 day trial, nor switch to high raw diet (meaning 75% or more calories coming from raw foods), I am certain that I won’t go back to eating the way I ate up until two weeks ago – a cooked vegan diet, with perhaps 10% raw calories. I’ve learned too much about food, and about what I can and enjoy eating to continue to eat that way. :-)

And finally… the scale showed 149 pounds this morning, which is only 1 pound less than last week, and 6 pounds less than two weeks ago. These numbers are a bit misleading though, because I did some light weight training this past week, but not during the prior week, so the loss of fat versus gain (or maintenance) of muscle mass would be different between the two weeks I’ve been on raw foods. The most telling is my waistline, which appears to have shrunk during this past week – something I have not noticed after my first week.

Since I am not concerned with weight loss, I do not have a target weight set, or especially worry about what I am eating. But, I know many people who try raw foods, do this to lose weight, so I thought I’d report my experience.

Today I had the following:

Meal #1 @12:15 pm

Since I made it through the first half of my 30 day trial, I decided it was time for another reward :-)

Few days ago, I made a chocolate smoothie/pudding that was simply awesome, so I thought I’d remake that for my first meal of the day.

You can find a recipe for this velvety smooth raw chocolate pudding in my raw food trial day 11 post.

Meal #2 @ 3:30pm

I decided to spend the afternoon watching the Bourne trilogy, so I needed a quick lunch – another pre-made meal:

Sweet southern BBQ

This entree was called Sweet Southern BBQ, and was pretty good, but not as good as the excellent Buffalo Bites I had two days ago. I think some sort of a dipping sauce would have taken this meal up a notch. The patties, by the way, were based around walnuts, Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds and almonds.

Meal #3 @ 8:30pm

I was not very hungry, so I decided to have a salad made from:

  • 5 oz of mixed baby greens
  • 1 tomato
  • half a cucumber

For the dressing I used:

  • 1 avocado, mashed with a fork
  • juice of one orange

This is one of my favorite dressings.

Today I snacked on:

  • 3 handfuls of goji berries
  • 1 plum

On to day 16…
