Raw food trial – day 13

by Bart on October 22, 2009

Today was another food shopping day. Before my raw food trial, I always went grocery shopping on Friday evening, because Friday is the day when most of the pre-made vegan goodies are delivered to the store. Since the best ones are also the most popular ones, by Saturday afternoon, the pickings are slim.

When on a raw food diet, I can go food shopping on any day, because there’s always going to be a good supply of greens, fruit, veggies, nuts and seeds available. It feels somewhat liberating actually. In addition, the raw pre-made goodies are somewhat pricey, so they do not disappear as quickly.

Today I had the following:

Meal #1 @ 11:00am

I decided to stick with the short tradition of having a bowl of chia porridge as the first meal of the day. This time, I added a little bit of raw cacao for an extra kick. ;-)

  • 1 cup chia gel
  • 2 bananas, mushed with fork
  • 2 tablespoons of lucuma powder
  • 1 teaspoon of maca powder
  • 1 tablespoon of cacao

This porridge was good, but for the volume, I think more cacao is needed.

I think next time, I am going to try to create chia gel using a different liquid than just plain water to see how that affects taste.

Meal #2 @ 3:30pm

When I went out shopping, I bought a few pre-made raw items. One of them was Buffalo Bites.

Both the patties and the dip, which has consistency of paste, are made from a fairly large number of ingredients. The patties are Brazil nut, corn, daikon, and zucchini based. The dip is based on a cashew and avocado mix.

This raw meal was simply excellent. Spicy, as expected, and very satisfying.

Meal #3 @ 6:10pm

For my evening meal, I decided to make a green smoothie. I used the following to get a 36oz drink:

  • 5 kale leaves
  • 2 bananas
  • 8 oz of frozen blueberries
  • 1.5 cups of water

This smoothie was pretty good, but I think I used too much water – about a cup would have been enough.

In the last two weeks, whenever I had my green smoothie in the morning, I’d spent the following 5 hours running to the bathroom over and over. Amazingly enough, I have not experienced any problems after drinking this one!

Why? Well, it could have something to do with the timing. When I have my smoothies in the morning, it is usually only few minutes after waking up. My stomach is empty, and my digestive system is not yet “fully awake” – if that even makes any scientific sense. :-)

But there might be another reason, and that is the ratio of fruits to greens in this smoothie versus most others I’ve had. My usual drink would only have the kale and the bananas… by adding 8 oz of blueberries (which was a bit more volume than the bananas), I changed that ratio very significantly. Perhaps that’s what helped my digestive system to.. ahem… hold on to the food :-)

I am going to have to test this theory tomorrow morning.

Today I snacked on:

  • 2 plums
  • 1 ginger tea
  • half a bag of kale tempuraw
  • 1 raw macaroon

This time I remembered to take a picture of the raw macaroons before I dug in :-)

On to day 14…
