Raw food trial – day 10

by Bart on October 19, 2009

For the most part, I am back to normal today, and the feeling of tiredness is mostly gone. Actually, the only time I felt somewhat unusual was shortly after lunch. If I had to describe it… the feeling was similar to having a light fever. It went away after about 20, perhaps 30 minutes.

I was hoping that removing fat from my green smoothies would do the trick, and stop the repeat bathroom trips throughout the morning. Unfortunately, after having my smoothie without any added fats this morning, but within 30 minutes of waking up, I still ended up in the bathroom way too many times. This lasted until about 11:30am. There is no pain or bloating or anything of that sort involved, just a strong urgency to go. Well, and the going itself. :-)

To test things further, I might try changing things up a little bit, and have my green smoothies in the afternoon, as the first meal after work. I have the chia porridge as a possible breakfast, but I’ll have to come up with some other ones as well. I could also try a fruit only smoothie, perhaps followed with some whole veggies an hour later, as a breakfast.

Today I had the following:

Meal #1 @ 8:20am

For my first meal of the day, I made a large, 39 oz green smoothie, consisting of:

  • 2 oz of baby spinach
  • 5 leaves of kale
  • 1 stalk of celery
  • 2 apples, red delicious
  • water and ice

I’ve been using mostly bananas as the fruit in my green smoothies, but apples are as good of a choice. While eating a cooked vegan diet, I normally eat at least one apple each day, but I’ve noticed that for some reason I have not been eating almost any of them while on a raw diet. Having apples in my green smoothies seems like the best way to take care of that.

The only downside of using apples instead of bananas in your green smoothies is that the juice and fiber seem to separate much more easily. This process still takes a few minutes, so unless you are taking your time to drink a 40 oz monster of a smoothie, it probably won’t be too much of a problem.

Meal #2 @ 12:30pm

Being short on time, and wanting to finish off all the pre-made raw goodies I bought on Friday, I had a raw lasagna for lunch.

Like before, it was delicious.

I followed the lasagna with a trail mix made up of:

  • a handful of pumpkin seeds
  • a handful of sunflower seeds
  • a handful of goji berries

And shortly afterwards I had 2 Medjool dates.

Meal # 3 @ 6:45pm

For dinner, I made a plate of raw zucchini pasta with marinara sauce, with enough left over for a meal tomorrow.

I followed it with a handful of goji berries and some flax seed crackers.

This is the first time I tried flax seed crackers of any kind, and I must say that the experience has been disappointing. These particular ones are made from a mix of flax seeds, tomatoes, bell peppers, and spices, then dehydrated. They seem almost too “greasy” tasting – and this is from someone who has no problem eating an avocado :-)

My snacks today were:

  • raw “turkey” like salad – left-overs from two nights ago
  • half a package of kale tempuraw
  • 1 plum
  • 1 cup of ginger tea
  • 1 bunch of green grapes
  • 1 handful of goji berries

On to day 11…
